Carefree wastewater is more complicated than most residents realize. The commercial core, multifamily properties, and a few subdivisions drain to Black Mountain Sewer, a private utility now operated by Liberty Utilities. Most single-family homes are on their own septic systems, permitted through Maricopa County. And since the old treatment plant in the Boulders shut down at the end of 2018, everything the utility collects gets pumped out of town to Scottsdale's Water Campus.
Pumping is the theme. The utility's own plant inventory lists more than a dozen duplex lift stations at spots locals drive past daily: El Pedregal, Sentinel Rock, Stagecoach Pass, Carefree Highway. The same terrain that forces a utility to pump does the same thing to private property. Custom homes tucked down into the boulders below street grade in Hawksnest or Nighthawk often need a sewage ejector pump to reach the sewer or the septic tank. On septic lots, granite that rules out a downhill drainfield leaves a pump tank pushing effluent uphill instead.
We handle the private side of all of it: ejector and grinder pumps, effluent pumps, floats and check valves, control panels, and private lift stations, plus the septic tanks themselves. Our headquarters is ten minutes away in Cave Creek, and the Carefree Highway depot is closer than that.

The town’s own guidance says most single-family homes in Carefree are on individual septic systems, while Black Mountain Sewer serves commercial and multifamily properties plus a few subdivisions, historically centered on the Boulders. If you are not sure, your utility bills will tell you, and Maricopa County’s online septic records search shows whether a system was permitted at your address.
The utility maintains its own stations, the ones at El Pedregal, Sentinel Rock, and the like. Anything on your parcel is yours: the ejector pump under a lower-level bath, a private lift station serving a guest house, the pump tank on a septic system. That private-side equipment is exactly what we repair and maintain.
Because of how homes are built here. Houses are set down among the boulders for privacy and views, which often puts part of the living space below the grade of the street, the sewer tap, or the septic tank. Fixtures below that line cannot drain by gravity, so an ejector pump lifts the wastewater up to where gravity can take over.
Treat it as a same-day problem, not a same-minute one. The alarm float trips while there is still reserve capacity in the tank, so silence the horn, reset the pump breaker once if it tripped, and hold off on laundry and long showers.
